Remaster of a cult classic shooter
Golden Eye 007 is a premium action game for PC coming from developer Code Mystics. It is the official remaster of the classic first-person shooter of the same name. This version introduces a number of key upgrades from improved textures to a new multiplayer mode.
Years before the release of James Bond 007: Nightfire, there was already Golden Eye 007, which most people would consider to be the more influential and impactful release based on the popular spy series. This remastered version honors that legacy while preserving the core experience for the new generation to see and play.
The definitive experience
Golden Eye 007 has achieved cult classic status by now and arguably helped define a generation of first-person shooters when it came out back in 1997. It was one of the first games that utilized 3D graphics and boasted multiplayer gameplay, complete with the wit and charm that the spy genre afforded. Here then comes the similarly titled remaster, offering the definitive experience for new and old gamers alike.
If you've ever played the original before, Golden Eye 007 is essentially the same game. It introduces tweaks to the gameplay, the most important of which is the much-improved control scheme, now supporting dual analog stick inputs. The other obvious upgrades included much better textures and remodeling of characters, as well as support for up to 4K video resolution and smoother 60fps gaming.
Now, on to arguably the biggest addition to this remaster, support for up to four-player split-screen local multiplayer, which is great and lets you play with friends and family. However, the game was also ported to the Nintendo Switch, and that one includes online multiplayer via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. This version, available on Xbox Game Pass, doesn't have that. The mind boggles.
Short end of the stick
While it's great that an official remaster of Golden Eye 007 came into existence, the fact that the experience isn't quite the same across all platforms leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Nevertheless, it remains the definitive experience that both long-time fans and newcomers can play and enjoy, with all of its modern upgrades. This is definitely a must-play.
